With temperatures dropping, I’ve perfecting more of my favorite cold-weather foods. While I love healthy and hearty meals during the chilly months, bone broth has always been a staple in my winter diet!
Bone broth is easily made and is prepared by boiling organic, grass-fed bones (beef, chicken, fish, etc.) in water with an acid, like vinegar, for just around 24-36 hours. Chicken and fish bones cook in a lot less time than beef bones, around 12-15 hours. I love to add veggies and spices in, which is optional but definitely encouraged for flavoring! Unlike regular broth, the bones you’re using should have a small amount of meat on them so that as many minerals and nutrients as possible can be stripped. This food is dated back to ancient times and has been proven to help with the following:
- boosts the immune system
- improves joint health
- overcomes food intolerances
- heals leaky gut
- reduces cellulite
- increases collagen production for beautiful skin
- promotes hair and nail growth
- boosts energy levels
On top of these great health benefits, bone broth also helps to support the beauty of your hair, nails and skin by increasing collagen production! That’s an added bonus that I know all women will love because collagen is the same anti-aging ingredient found in popular moisturizers and serums. Collagen helps keep skin smooth, tight and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. This protein is found in the connective tissue of many animals and is concentrated in bones, marrow, tendons and ligaments. Once this collagen is broken down it is transformed into gelatin which is easily absorbed (nutrients and all) in the digestive tract.
My favorite bone broths are made from organic chicken, which is perfect for those cold winter days or when you’re feeling a little under the weather. Check out my favorite bone broth recipe and start discovering the benefits of this super food!
