Spices Aren’t Scary!
Naked meals are never fun, that is why I am always sure to add spices. Not only are spices flavor enhancing, they also have many health benefits. Spices are made of the seeds, berries, bark or roots of a plant which are rich in phytochemicals, which fight inflammation and reduce damage to your body’s cells. Spices are also full of antibacterial and antiviral properties, and many are high in b-vitamins and trace minerals. Finally, given that spices add extra flavor to our meals, they can help you cut back on less healthy ingredients such as table salt, added fat and sugar.
Chili Flakes
Given that flu season is flaring up, I highly suggest adding a dash of this spice to your meals as it is a great ingredient that fortifies your immune system with its vitamin A properties! Given this spice has a bit of heat, you can sweat and detoxify. The heat can also bolster your heart health by reducing cholesterol, triglyceride levels and platelet aggregation! All I must say is, can you take the heat? If the answer is yes, then sprinkle a bit on your Palmini pasta dishes and you’ll be good to go!
Cinnamon
I’m sure a lot of you have this basic ingredient laying around the house, well what if I told you that it has the highest antioxidant value of any spice? I’m sure you’re running to grab it from your pantry now. It has been shown to reduce inflammation, lower blood sugar, alleviate nausea, and aid in fat burning. Cinnamon is the perfect addition to sweet snacks, breakfast dishes or just sprinkle it in your morning coffee!
Cumin
What a powerful taste this iron rich spice has. Cumin and weight loss have been associated with one another as it has antimicrobial properties used to reduce flatulence! Cumin is high in vitamin E, which aids in reducing signs of premature aging like wrinkles, age spots and sagging skin. Having trouble sleeping? Use cumin! Mix cumin with red chili flakes and not only will your dishes have an exotic taste but will be doing your body wonders! Try my Indian Coconut Chicken and enjoy the benefits of this spice.
Himalayan Salt
Many people hear salt, associate it with sodium and see high cholesterol beeping in front of our eyes with a big X. Himalayan salt is a different story. As it is mined from ancient sea beds, it is pure from environmental toxins, unlike the table salt we’re used to. Can you imagine that 84 trace minerals are found in this kind of salt?! This pure salt is shown to support weight loss, detox and balance your hormones. So please go do your body a favor and replace your normal table salt with Himalayan salt, you won’t be sorry!
Turmeric
Please go buy this spice right away and put it on everything, I literally use it for almost all of my meals! Turmeric is especially tasty on egg dishes, soups and baked goods! It is a great source of curcumin, which is an antioxidant and reduces inflammation. Make sure to always use black pepper together with turmeric because it boosts the absorption of curcumin. Studies also show that daily consumption of turmeric can help to prevent Alzheimer’s and relieve arthritis!
Za’atar
This Middle Eastern mix consists of thyme, sesame seeds, sumac, salt and contains a wealth of powerful nutrients and organic compounds! This blend of spices leads to clearing the respiratory tracts, strengthen the bones, boost cognition, and increase overall energy! Use it on salads, dips, and GG crackers.
